How to Find the End of Yarn (2 Easy Methods)

To find the “center pull” or “end”, stick your index fingers and thumbs inside the cavity of the yarn. Grab the clump and spot that one strand that connects the clump and yarn. Wind it around one side of the skein and continue until you spot the end of the yarn.

How to Find the End of Yarn

How Do I Find the End of Yarn

Finding the end of the yarn properly is important to prevent tangling and the consequent troubles. For a novice, it might seem puzzling and intimidating to find the end. That is why knowing the right procedures to find the right end is of great importance.

There are two different ways of winding a yarn. One is a pull skein and another is a ball. Both terms relating to yarn are used interchangeably in general. But when it comes to application, the two styles make a difference.

Method 1: Pull Skein

Pull skeins are in general, narrower and longer in shape. They are like cylinders or tubes. Moreover, they are designed to be pulled from the center. The best thing about this kind of winding is that pulling the end from the center prevents it from rolling around. Therefore, you can start knitting or crocheting from right there. However, pulling the starting end or the wrong end will result in a tangle.

Step 1: Find the Outer End First

The first step is to find the outer yarn end. It can be easily found in one of two places. One is underneath the yarn label or the other is that it can be tucked inside one of the skein openings.

You are not supposed to work with the outer end as it will create tangling and so on. After finding the outer end, simply tie it to an outer winding softly. Once you are done, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Pull the Clump Away From the Skein

The yarn end is also referred to as the “center pull”. Once you are done with finding the outer end, it’s time to start finding the end of the yarn. To do that, stick your thumbs and index finger together inside the center of the skein. Try to feel for a clump of the yarn by going inside of it. You should find it somewhere right in the middle.

Once you grab the clump, take a hold of it and pull it out of the skein. It may look a little bit messy, but keep pulling the clump away from the skein until you notice that one strand connecting the two. However, do not attempt to pull the clump forcefully.

Step 3: Take Tangling Countermeasures

Grab the strand that you spotted and start wrapping it around one side of the skein. Now wind the rest of the clump you previously removed. To do that, form small yarn piles from the clump in sections and then wind each pile onto the skein. At this rate, you will be able to tackle tangles.

Once you are finished with winding, you will see that the center-pull end easily comes off the skein. After some yards, you will be pulling from the center smoothly without any chance of tangling.

Method 2: Balls

Compared to pull-skeins, balls are rounder and shorter. They are not wound to have a center pull. To start working with a ball, it is a matter of finding the outer end of the yarn.

As for finding the outside end, it is pretty easy. Pull the band off and start looking for the end. If you face trouble finding the end, put a needle or hook under the top layer of wraps on the ball. Then lift nicely to help locate the end. Lastly, start working from this end.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

How can I join the ends of a yarn?

All you have to do is simply lay your yarn on top of the row and work over it for a few stitches. Then pick up a new yarn at the bottom of the stitch and continue.

What are the popular methods of pulling yarn?

Two popular methods of pulling yarn off a skein are pulling from the outside of the skein and pulling from the center of it. In both cases, pulling yarn from inside the skein makes the yarn more manageable, as it keeps the skein still. The challenging part of pulling yarn from the center of a skein is determining where to begin pulling.

Conclusion

As it can be seen, finding the end of the yarn is an easy yet delicate task. However if you are using a skein and can find the inner end, you will have less tangling while knitting or crocheting.
