How to Keep Purse From Slipping off Shoulder (Easy and Straightforward)

It’s not easy keeping your purse on the shoulder for long hours, especially when the straps are too thin or have a chain-like shape. They seem to come slipping down no matter what, or even worse, prefer only one shoulder and fall off the other.

Raising the particular shoulder often helps, but it has consequences like shoulder tension and sometimes a sore neck. Other solutions include a rubber under the strap, crossing straps over each other, and sticking a non-slip gammy tape. But if none of them works, you might have to end up buying a new purse.

How to Keep Purse From Slipping off Shoulder

Why Does My Bag Fall Off My Shoulder?

People would say that the way you carry your purse isn’t alright or you are not lifting up your shoulder enough. But those are just general assumptions and have clearly very little to do with the actual dilemma.

In reality, the width of the straps causes the purse to fall off your shoulder. Many bags will have straps too wide for women to carry on their comparatively thinner shoulder area. Even when the straps are narrow enough, they tend to lack any form of grip that can actually help them stay put.

Another reason why most people struggle with keeping their purses in place is that they switch shoulders more often. Generally, anyone would like to carry the purse on that particular shoulder that’s higher and tenser than the other. So, it is more likely to slip off whenever they switch sides.

How Do I Keep My Bag From Falling off My Shoulder

Essentially, there are a few tricks you can try to keep your purse from falling off.

1. Use Something to Create Friction

The trick is to create friction between the strap and your clothes so that the purse doesn’t slip. You can do so by buying a rubber pad to put on the straps. Now, this method comes in handy during summer days, as in winter, the clothing will have some friction to it already.

2. Raise the Carrying Shoulder

Your default carrying shoulder will stay slightly lifted up without you actively trying. But when you shift sides, raise the other shoulder by a tad bit too. Doing so will help you keep your purse in place no matter which side it’s on.

Although this small trick can do wonders, it has its downsides. For example, it can cause shoulder tension if done for a large portion of the day. Hence, try using a smaller purse to keep muscle tension as low as possible.

3. Cross the Straps Over Each Other

It’s a no-brainer that keeping only one strap is more convenient than keeping both on the shoulder. Therefore, cross those over one another whenever possible. Another neat little trick is to keep the purse zipped since it feels clumsier and heavier otherwise. Also, the items inside can all lean to one side, hampering the overall balance.

4. Get a New Purse

Now, this might come as a surprise tip, but often a new bag is the best way you can fix things up. For example, if you purchase a new bag with leather straps, they will get softer over time and adjust to the shape of your shoulder. As a result, the bag won’t fall off so easily.

How Do I Get My Purse to Stay On My Shoulder

If you end up with the strap slipping off, you can always use a shoulder bag strap gripper. There are different names for it, the most widely used ones being Non-Slip Tape and Gammy tape. It is a great alternative if you don’t prefer anything extra to wear with your outfit.

First, peel off the sticker on the back of the non-slip tape.

Then, apply gentle pressure and press it on the strap of your bag.

The entire process is so easy and hassle-free that you won’t even have to put down your purse for once.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers (FAQs)

  • What kind of purse will stay on my shoulder and not slide off when I move?

Although it’s hard to tell without getting an idea of your body frame, a general rule of thumb is to get one with the proper strap length. Plus, the strap should be neither too thick nor too thin but something that fits your shoulder width. Besides, you can go for leather straps as they mold into a shape that eventually fits your shoulder and does not slip off easily.

  • How do I keep my purse from slouching?

If you want your purse to stay rigid and upright for longer, try using pieces of plastic or thick paper inside its layers. Also, you can prevent it from slouching by inserting plastic in the bottom portion. That will, in turn, keep its shape intact.

Bottom Line

If you want your purse to stay on your shoulder, you must buy it right. Pick one with a chain or adjustable strap so that you can regulate it later to prevent slipping off. Besides, keep your body frame in mind and make sure it gets along with the bag measurements. Otherwise, it might be just another misfit that you’ll regret buying.
