How to Make a Button Extender

The simplest way to make a button extender is to find an elasticated cord that will work as an extension. Connect it with the button and fortify it using the “figure eight” style. Tie one end of Figure-eight to the button by using a small section of the twine

When your favorite garment no longer fits, it is enough to ruin your day and induce frustration. However, a simple hack such as making your button extender can save your day and ease your discomfort. This article will show you just that.

How to Make a Button Extender

How to Make a Button Extender

When you let yourself loose and enjoy your vacation for a brief time, you often find that your favorite item of clothing does not fit anymore. It can be a frustrating issue. However, you have the option of adapting to them instead of simply giving up and throwing out your wardrobe.

All you have to do is to make some minor adjustments and see the astonishing result. The funny thing is that you do not even have to be a professional seamstress to make your garment wearable again and you won’t even need a needle and a thread.

Step 1: Determine the Size of the Extension

At first, you have to try on the garment that you think must be resized. You can use a measuring tape to measure the approximate size of the extension that you need.

Once you have the data, take an elasticated cord or twine and take a length that is double the size of the extension length. Then you must cut that section of twine off and tie the two ends of it together.

Step 2: Attach the Extension Cord to the Button

In this step, you have to connect the elastic extension cord to the button. Note that your button should match the buttons on your garment. If there is a spare button on your shirt, you can use that.

The extension cord is to be tied to the button by the ends of the cord. Tue it several times to ensure that it does not come loose.

Step 3: Fortify the Extension Cord

Once you are done attaching the extension cord, it is time to fortify it. You have to double up the extension cord section in a “figure eight” style. Again do this doubling up so that the figure-eight reappears and the cord gets tripled.

Repeat this process several times until you see the figure eight is about 1 inch wide or it matches the required extension of your garment.

Step 4: Finish the Process

The final task for you is to attach the figure eight section to the button. To do that, cut off another section of elasticated twine. It should be small, about 1 or 2 inches in length. You have the option of using a small section of wire as well.

Grab one end of figure eight and tie it to the button using that small section of twine or wire tag. Once done, you can easily fit this button extender to your garment by pinching the button through the buttonhole.

How Do You Extend a Button on Pants?

Extending a button on pants is no different than a shirt collar extending process. You can simply make use of a hair elastic that closely matches the color of your pants. Then loop the elastic band around your button.

The next step is to thread the hair elastic through the buttonhole. To secure it, loop the elastic back over the button. That way it will ensure that your pants stay closed. At the same time, it will give you the extra inch that you desperately needed.

How Do You Make a Jean Extender?

The simplest hack to make a jean extender is to use an elastic hair band or a ponytail holder. You have to stick the ponytail holder through the buttonhole of your jeans. The next thing to do is to tuck one end of the elastic band through the other end.

This should give you a kind of stretchy loop that fastens over the button. Although, you can get the best fit by leaving the zipper about one inch unzipped. Also, you should make sure that you fold the zipper tab down.

How Do You Make a Waist Extender out of Jeans?

You can make a waistband extender to fit your jeans. All you need is a shank button and cording with custom length. The shank bottom is a button without any hole in the top and a stem on the bottom. For a cord, you can choose something stable such as a shoelace.

Now join the two ends of the cord together. Then cut the extra ends off and put the new button through the buttonhole. Continue by looping the cord around the old button. Once done, you will have your very own waist extender for your jeans.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do jeans stretch after washing?

Naturally, jeans do stretch. The fabric naturally forms in the body. Although, how much they will loosen is hard to pin down as it depends on how much you wear and wash them.

Conclusion

A button extender is a convenient accessory that gives you a quick fix to your fitting problems. You can either purchase or make them yourself. However, if you know how to make one yourself, you can say goodbye to those uncomfortable days outside.
